Welcome to the Skonkworks!
The backshop of the Allegheny Valley

What is 'the Skonkworks? -
Before Lockheed-Martin's Advanced Development Programs there was ...... Dogpatch.

Dogpatch
In the comic strip lil Abner, a couple enterprising(?) fellows named Barnsmell operated the Skonk Works, where they distilled dead skunks and old shoes into a powerful elixer that ---- I don't think anybody ever found a good use for.......

The AV Skonkworks attempts to blend humor, storytelling, basic scratchbuilding skills, and some real history into every little mangle it produces. If you learn something new, or get up the courage to try making something yourself, then the project was a success.

We now even have our own mascot! Meet Stanley Stinkem, esq.

Like Big Barnsmell, the inside man at the Skonk Works, I pretty much end up doing a lot of stuff all by myself - and often using things other folks don't want to do it.with. If there is another Large Scale modeler within 20 miles, I haven't met him. Plus, being on Disability, I have lots of time, but not much money. If I want something, I can't just whip out Amex, so I whip out a razor saw instead.

What is a 'Backshop'? Most real railroads had a cluster of buildings called a backshop where heavy repairs, or even new construction took place. There was usually a large open building with several tracks leading inside, a machine shop - with huge lathes, milling machines, planers, etc, a foundry where they cast parts and a forge - which is something like a blacksmith shop on steroids. Some also have a separate smaller shop building for freight and passenger cars

The AV Backshop isn't quite so grand. It consists of a 4 foot long workbench with a scroll saw and drill press, two Dremel rotary tool knock offs, my Someday Files, and a few hand tools. Support structures are the kitchen table, the top of Kim's washing machine and the bed if I need a larger space and feel like getting grumped at.... that's pretty much it.

The Someday Files (as in "I want to build that some day") consist of about 1500 images I've found and saved to the hard drive on my ancient laptop. As various projects get built older photos get transferred to disc or deleted, and new ones are constantly added as I find them. I've occasionally thought about putting together a CD for modellers, but most of the images aren't mine, and a many are probably copyrighted, so getting all the proper permissions just sounds too much like a royal pain in the butt.

What I can do for you is list other builder's pages and some trusted commercial links. The trouble with making a links page is that about as soon as you publish it, some of the links will go dead. Very annoying. So if you find a dead link here, I apologize.
