Since the weather was nice and I had a
doctor's appointment in Indiana, Pa., Kim and I decided to make a side
trip on the way home. Unfortunately between the doctor running late and
traffic we ended up trying to beat the sun... and lost.
The route north from Kittanning was laid out in this Survey Report
from July 26, 1853 (click image to read it online!)
Picking up just north of Kittanning, near where we left off in Part I
19 months before, the road follows the ROW for a few miles here. The
first thing we found of interest was this deck bridge over the
Cowanshannock creek
An 1895 Armstrong County map Showing the AVRR

A bit further north, looking south
And north, not really much to see
Further on at Mosgrove we found another deck bridge over Pine Creek,
and a viaduct once belonging to the B&O crossing the river.. Here
was where the light started to fail
A bit up this tiny one lane road there was a small hamlet, and the RoW
looked like this
A bit further on near a camp (Pearts Eddy?) we found this milepost
This concrete box culvert ran under the ROW just beyond the camp
An AVRR lantern! The globe says "Penn Line", so it dates from the
period when the PRR was operating the line, but hadn't yet absorbed it.
Our narrow road ended at the river lock
But the RoW continued on
Another interesting bit of AVRR railroadiana, an 1886 pass in
very nice condition
Backtracking and taking a different road over the mountain used up the
rest of the light, but we rejoined the ROW at Templeton and found
it pretending to be an alley
Templeton in the 1950s and Templeton Station

another windy backroad brought us the
the RoW again at Rimer (Rimerton), and yet another bridge over a dirt
road
Rimerton Station - torn down during WWII

At that point we (perhaps wisely) decided to call it a night. I'd
really like
to revisit Templeton and Mahoning in the daytime to see what is
actually still there. If we do I'll update this page.
